About

Caol Ila Distillery

When you arrive at Caol Ila, the ground slopes down to the Sound of Islay, with Jura’s rugged hills straight across the water. The Paps of Jura stand tall on the horizon, making this one of the most memorable views you’ll find at any distillery in Scotland.Caol Ila opened in 1846 and is now the biggest distillery on Islay. Most of what they make goes into blends, but the single malt has its own following. The whisky is lighter than the peaty drams from southern Islay, with notes of citrus, a bit of peat smoke, and a clean, coastal feel. It’s often the first Islay whisky people try - and for good reason. The distillery buildings are plain, built for function more than looks, but the view from the visitor centre is hard to beat. Big windows look out over the Sound of Islay toward Jura, where you might see a CalMac ferry go by or, if you’re lucky, a sea eagle overhead. Caol Ila sits on the north coast near Port Askaig, not far from Bunnahabhain, and is well worth a stop if you’re exploring Islay’s whisky trail.

FAQs

What is Caol Ila whisky like?

It's a lighter, more delicate peated Islay malt than the intense smokiness of Laphroaig or Lagavulin, which makes it a good introduction to the island's whisky. Expect lemon, light smoke and sea air, with a clean, refreshing finish.

Where is Caol Ila Distillery?

Caol Ila is on the north-east coast of Islay, just north of Port Askaig on the Sound of Islay. Perched above the narrow strait between Islay and Jura, it has one of the most dramatic settings of any Scottish distillery, with the Paps of Jura straight across the water.

Can you visit Caol Ila Distillery?

It's open year-round for guided tours and tastings. Being less visited than the famous Kildalton distilleries on the south coast, it makes for a more intimate experience, though tours must be booked in advance. The ferry to Jura leaves from Port Askaig just below the distillery, so a Jura extension is easy to add.

What is Caol Ila's role in Scotch blending?

It's one of the most important malts in Scotch blending. The vast majority of its production goes into Diageo's blends, Johnnie Walker in particular, where its lighter peat character makes it a versatile component. Only relatively recently has more of the single malt been bottled under its own name.
