Rosslyn Chapel
Renowned for its association with the Da Vinci Code conspiracy, Rosslyn Chapel brims with mysteries and legends. At first glance, the chapel might look small and humble, but upon closer inspection, you'll see how awe-inspiring the stone masonry and carvings really are. There's even a story about the 'Apprentice Pillar' which you might know, where the apprentice was left to carve one pillar by himself and the work was so spectacular that the master mason killed him in a fit of jealousy!

Melrose Abbey
Crossing into the Borders, you'll arrive at the magnificent Melrose Abbey. Founded in 1136, this was one of the wealthiest and most beautiful of all the great Border abbeys, and its soaring red sandstone ruins are still adorned with some of the finest carvings in Scotland — keep an eye out for the famous gargoyle of a pig playing the bagpipes! It's also believed to be the final resting place of the heart of Robert the Bruce.

Abbotsford House
On the banks of the River Tweed sits Abbotsford, the beloved home built by Sir Walter Scott, one of Scotland's greatest literary figures. The author of Ivanhoe and Rob Roy poured his imagination into this romantic baronial mansion, filling it with historic treasures and curiosities. Stroll through its grand rooms and beautiful gardens and discover the world of the man who did so much to shape Scotland's romantic image.

Scott's View & Dryburgh Abbey
A short drive away lies Scott's View, a breathtaking outlook over the Tweed valley towards the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills — said to have been the author's favourite view in all the world. Nearby, in one of the most peaceful and secluded settings imaginable, stand the romantic ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, where Sir Walter Scott himself is laid to rest. A serene and fitting end to the day before the journey back to Edinburgh.
