What you will see on this tour.

Sail across the water to the beautiful Isle of Bute for a day quite unlike any other. Cross from Wemyss Bay to the Victorian seaside town of Rothesay, explore its rare circular medieval castle, and step inside Mount Stuart — one of Britain's most spectacular stately homes, a breathtaking Gothic palace set in 300 acres of gardens.

With seal-watching bays and island scenery to finish, it's an unforgettable escape just a short ferry ride from the mainland.

Itinerary

Morning
Across the Sea to Rothesay

Hotel Pick-up
Your own personal guide will pick you up right outside your hotel, usually arriving 15 minutes before your tour begins, ensuring a warm and seamless start to your experience.

Wemyss Bay & the Ferry to Bute
Leaving Glasgow behind, you'll travel to the coast at Wemyss Bay, home to one of the most beautiful railway stations in Scotland with its sweeping glass roof and Victorian elegance. From here, you'll board the ferry for the short and scenic crossing to the Isle of Bute.

Rothesay & Rothesay Castle
Arriving in the charming town of Rothesay, you'll discover a grand Victorian seaside resort that was once the holidaying favourite of Glaswegians. At its heart stands Rothesay Castle, a rare and remarkable circular fortress dating back to the 13th century, complete with a water-filled moat. Once besieged by Norse invaders, it's one of the most unusual and important medieval castles in Scotland.

Lunch
Your guide will provide you with a variety of lunch options, ensuring there's something to suit every taste and dietary preference.

Afternoon
A Gothic Palace & Island Shores

Mount Stuart House & Gardens
Built in the late 19th century by the incredibly wealthy 3rd Marquess of Bute, this astonishing Gothic palace was a marvel of its age. Step inside the breathtaking Marble Hall beneath its star-spangled ceiling, then explore the 300 acres of beautiful gardens and woodland that surround the house. - Mount Stuart is open seasonally, with entry subject to operating hours.

Scalpsie Bay
Before catching the ferry home, we'll pause at the beautiful Scalpsie Bay on the island's west coast — the best spot on Bute to see its resident seals basking on the rocks, with sweeping views across to the Isle of Arran beyond. A peaceful and memorable end to your island adventure.

Drop-off
Sit back and relax as your personal guide drops you back at your hotel, ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free end to your journey.

What our Guests say

FAQs

Do I need to book the ferry to Bute?

There's no need to book anything yourself. We'll take care of all the logistics, arranging a short and scenic ferry crossing from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay, which is a lovely part of the experience. Since the day is built around the ferry sailings, your guide will plan the timings to keep everything running smoothly.

What happens if the weather affects the ferry?

Disruption is uncommon, though in severe weather sailings can occasionally change. We keep a close eye on conditions and will always adapt the day to make the most of your time, whatever the weather brings.

What is Mount Stuart?

Mount Stuart is one of the most spectacular stately homes in Britain. It's an astonishing Gothic palace set in 300 acres of gardens, and the first home in the world to have a heated indoor swimming pool. Do note it's open seasonally.

Will we see any seals?

There's a good chance. At Scalpsie Bay on the island's west coast, you'll be able to spot the resident seals basking on the rocks, with lovely views across to the Isle of Arran beyond.

Does this tour depart from Glasgow?

It does. This tour departs from Glasgow, travelling to the coast at Wemyss Bay for the ferry crossing to Bute, making it an easy and memorable island escape from the city. We can also pick up from Rothesay if you're looking for a shore excursion on the island.
