8-Day Scotland Whisky Islands — Islay and Speyside

Days 1–2: Your whisky journey begins with a personal pick-up from your Edinburgh hotel and a scenic drive west into the Highlands, skirting the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond before reaching Loch Awe, where the romantic ruins of Kilchurn Castle sit framed by mountains. You’ll arrive in the Victorian harbour town of Oban — the ‘seafood capital of Scotland’ — for a tour and tasting at its waterfront distillery, with time for a relaxed lunch of fresh-landed langoustine and oysters. The next morning, you’ll continue down the coast through the ancient standing stones of Kilmartin Glen before reaching the ferry port at Kennacraig. The two-hour crossing to Islay is part of the adventure — watch for the Paps of Jura on the horizon and enjoy a dram in the ferry bar as the island draws near. You’ll arrive into the whitewashed village of Bowmore, your home for the next three nights, perched on the shores of Loch Indaal.

Days 3–4: Two full, unhurried days await on Islay, the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’, where peat smoke and sea air give the island’s single malts their unmistakable character. Your first day follows the celebrated Kildalton coast to Islay’s southern trio — Laphroaig, with its traditional floor maltings; Lagavulin, set against the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle; and the cult favourite Ardbeg, where a tasting overlooks the Atlantic. You’ll pause for lunch by the shore and visit the ancient Kildalton Cross, carved more than 1,200 years ago. The following day turns to Loch Indaal and the wild Rhinns of Islay, with the island’s oldest distillery at Bowmore, the innovative Bruichladdich and the farm distillery of Kilchoman, with a relaxed lunch along the way — finishing, perhaps, with a wander on the white sands of Machir Bay. Each evening, Bowmore’s welcoming pubs and seafood tables await.

Days 5–6: Bidding a fond farewell to Islay, you’ll catch the morning ferry back to the mainland and call at Inveraray, the elegant Georgian town on Loch Fyne, with its fairytale castle — seat of Clan Campbell — and the chance to browse the Loch Fyne whisky shop. From here the road climbs over the Rest and Be Thankful pass and north into Glencoe, the most dramatic and storied valley in the Highlands, before a relaxed lunch and your overnight in Fort William, beneath Ben Nevis. The next day follows the Great Glen along the shores of Loch Ness, where the ruins of Urquhart Castle stand watch over the water and an optional cruise offers the chance to look for its legendary resident. After lunch, you’ll continue east into Speyside, the malt whisky heartland, arriving in the handsome distilling village of Craigellachie.

Days 7–8: A full day in Speyside awaits, where the grand old houses of Scotch whisky cluster along the River Spey. You’ll visit Glenfiddich, one of the few remaining family-owned distilleries and home to the world’s best-selling single malt, and the Macallan, with its striking contemporary distillery set in rolling Speyside countryside. A stop at the Speyside Cooperage reveals the ancient craft of cask-making, and there’s a relaxed lunch in whisky country along the way. On your final morning, a parting dram at Cardhu — the distillery pioneered by two generations of women — sets you on the road south through the Cairngorms National Park and the Victorian spa town of Pitlochry. After a final lunch, you’ll journey back to Edinburgh, your Whisky Islands tour complete and a cellar’s worth of memories made.

Next morning head east to Speyside for Glenfiddich Explorer Tour and Macallan Distillery in the afternoon, returning to Edinburgh on the final day via the Cairngorms and Pitlochry.
