It's the King's official residence in Scotland, used for state ceremonies and official engagements including Holyrood Week in late June and early July. When the King isn't in residence, it opens to the public.
Its strongest draw is the link to Mary Queen of Scots, who lived here from 1561 to 1567. The historic apartments are among Scotland's most evocative royal rooms, including the chamber where her secretary David Rizzio was murdered in 1566.
Mary Queen of Scots is the best-known resident, living here from her return from France in 1561 until she was forced to abdicate in 1567. Other Stuart monarchs, among them James IV, James V and Charles I, also held court at Holyrood.
It is a royal residence, one of the monarch's official homes and run by the Royal Household.
