Aviemore is Scotland's best-known outdoor sports resort and the gateway to the Cairngorms National Park, the UK's largest. It draws people for winter skiing, mountain biking, hiking, wildlife watching, and the Strathspey Steam Railway.
The Cairngorm Mountain Funicular Railway, 8 miles from Aviemore, runs year-round up to the Ptarmigan top station at 1,097 metres. Up there you'll find the UK's highest restaurant and a mountain exhibition. Check cairngormmountain.org for current times and prices.
Loch Ness is about 30 miles northwest of Aviemore, roughly 40 minutes by car on the A9 and A82, so it's easy to pair with an Aviemore visit in a single day.
Around 3,230 people live in Aviemore. It's small but well set up, with hotels, restaurants, outdoor gear shops, and a mainline railway station that runs direct services from London.
