Known as The Gateway to the Highlands, Callander is an extremely pretty tourist town. Bursting with coffee shops, gifts shops – and of course a fantastic whisky shop – the first stop on this tour will get you ready for everything that’s to come. You can also take a stroll along the River Teith which flows along the edge of the town, with spectacular views of Ben Ledi and the Craggs behind the town. Known as the 'Gateway to the Highlands', Callander is a lively market town on the River Teith at the edge of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. It was the filming location for the BBC series Doctor Finlay's Casebook and makes a popular base for the Trossachs and Rob Roy Country.
Callander stood in as 'Tannochbrae' in the 1960s BBC series Doctor Finlay's Casebook. The surrounding Trossachs landscape has featured in other productions too, with Outlander filming locations nearby.
Ben Ledi, the 879-metre hill above Callander, takes its name from Scottish Gaelic. It's most often translated as 'Hill of God', though scholars still debate the exact origin.
Stirling is the closest city, about 14 miles to the southeast, roughly 20 minutes by car. Glasgow is around 40 miles to the southwest, about 50 minutes away.
