Culross

Culross is a beautifully preserved royal burgh on the Fife coast, its cobbled streets and ochre-washed buildings little changed since the 16th and 17th centuries. It's best known as the main filming location for Cranesmuir in Outlander, and for Culross Palace, an NTS-run merchant's house that's among the finest of its kind.

Culross is about 18 miles north-west of Edinburgh, roughly a 35-minute drive across the Forth. It sits on the north shore of the firth in Fife and pairs well with Dunfermline, Falkland Palace or the East Neuk villages.

Culross is best explored slowly on foot. Don't miss Culross Palace and its restored 17th-century garden (National Trust for Scotland), the Town House, the Mercat Cross, and Culross Abbey on the hill above. The cobbled Back Causeway is especially atmospheric, and there are a few cafes and gift shops to round out a visit.
