Doune Castle

Doune is one of Scotland's best-preserved medieval castles, and it's had quite a screen career. It played Castle Leoch in Outlander, Castle Anthrax and Swamp Castle in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Winterfell in the original Game of Thrones pilot. The castle dates from the 14th century and is remarkably complete.

Doune Castle is about 38 miles north-west of Edinburgh, roughly an hour's drive. It sits just outside the village of Doune near Stirling, which makes it a natural pairing with Stirling Castle, Bannockburn or the Trossachs on a day tour from Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Doune is run by Historic Environment Scotland and open to everyone year-round, with some seasonal change to hours and an entry charge. It suits all ages, though the spiral staircases and uneven floors may be a consideration if mobility is an issue. The excellent audio guide comes with your ticket.
