Falkland Palace

Falkland Palace was the Stuart monarchs' favourite country retreat, most of all for Mary Queen of Scots, who spent some of her happiest years here. It holds the oldest real tennis court in Britain, still played on today, and sits in formal Renaissance gardens at the heart of a well-preserved market town. Outlander fans will know the village as 1940s Inverness.

It does. Falkland stands in for 1940s Inverness in the opening episodes, where Claire and Frank stay before she falls through the stones. The high street, the Covenanter Hotel and several nearby buildings all appear in those scenes.

Falkland Palace is about 30 miles north of Edinburgh, roughly 50 minutes by car over the Forth bridges. It stands in the village of Falkland in Fife and pairs naturally with Culross, St Andrews or the East Neuk fishing villages.

The Royal Tennis Court at Falkland dates from 1539 and is the oldest in Britain, still in use for the old game of real tennis, which is quite different from the modern lawn game. When sessions are on you can watch play in progress. The court is run by the Falkland Palace Real Tennis Club alongside the National Trust for Scotland.
