Glasgow University

Glasgow University warmly welcomes visitors. The historic Gilmorehill campus is open to the public, so you can wander the Gothic quadrangles, visit the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery (both free) and explore the grounds at your leisure. Guided campus tours run at certain times of year.

The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451, one of the four ancient universities of Scotland and the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world. Its present Gilmorehill campus, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Gothic Revival style, went up in the 1870s after the university moved from its original site on the city's High Street.

The Hunterian is Scotland's oldest public museum, founded in 1807 and part of the University of Glasgow. Its collections span natural history, archaeology, Roman finds from the Antonine Wall, and scientific instruments once owned by James Watt. Entry is free and it opens to the public throughout the year.

It sits right above Kelvingrove Park, so the two pair easily on a visit to Glasgow's West End. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a short walk downhill through the park, which makes this corner of the city one of its richest for culture, architecture and green space.
