Two things draw people to Glencoe. One is the landscape, from the Three Sisters peaks to its brooding atmosphere. The other is history: in February 1692, 38 members of the MacDonald clan were killed by government soldiers they had given shelter to. It remains one of Scotland's most visited valleys.
It's one of the most striking landscapes in Scotland, and worth the trip even if you only have time to stop at the main viewpoints.
Glen Etive, a side valley off Glencoe, stood in for James Bond's ancestral home in the 2012 film. You reach it on a single-track road that turns off the A82.
Glen' comes from the Scottish Gaelic 'gleann', meaning a narrow mountain valley. It's one of the most common place-name words in the Highlands.
