Inveraray is a beautiful preserved Georgian town that overlooks the calm water of Loch Fyne, founded in 1745 by the 3rd Duke of Argyll. Wander through its charming streets, visit the Old Sweet Shop or have a coffee whilst soaking in the serene loch side views. Don’t miss Inveraray Jail - which is now a fascinating museum that provides a rare glimpse into prison life. Just outside the town is Inveraray Castle, the Neo-Gothic home of the Dukes of Argyll. The castle is surrounded by expansive grounds with designated walking trails and provides stunning views, particularly from the tower atop Dun Na Cuaiche - the castle does close to visitors at certain times so be sure to check or get in touch with us. Inveraray is also a perfect base for day trips to the Highlands and Islands.

Downton Abbey's regular home is Highclere Castle in Hampshire, but Inveraray Castle did feature in the show's 2012 Christmas special, filmed here on location. It has also appeared in other film and television work over the years.
Inveraray sits in Argyll on the shores of Loch Fyne, which puts it in the western Highlands. It's one of Scotland's finest Georgian planned towns, built in the 18th century by the Duke of Argyll.
Inveraray is known for its elegant Georgian architecture, Inveraray Castle (seat of the Duke of Argyll and Chief of Clan Campbell), the historic jail museum, and its setting on Loch Fyne, famous for its seafood.
It's one of Scotland's finest stately homes, and the interiors are the reason to go, particularly the Armoury Hall and the State Dining Room. Its Clan Campbell links and a wave of Downton Abbey-style tourism have brought in a new generation of visitors. Adult entry is around £16.
