It comes down to personal taste. Lagavulin is a premium experience for fans of heavily peated whisky, Bruichladdich is the most progressive and innovative, and Bowmore brings the most history with its traditional floor maltings. The three Kildalton distilleries on the south coast, Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig, sit within walking distance along the roughly 3-mile Kildalton Coastal Walk. A bike is another good way to visit several distilleries under your own steam.
Islay is pronounced 'EYE-lah', not 'EYE-lay'. The name comes from Old Norse.
Bowmore is Islay's main town, sitting on the shores of Loch Indaal. It's home to the round church, built circular so the devil has no corners to hide in, and to Bowmore Distillery, the island's oldest.
