Wild swimming is popular here, with well-used spots at Luss, Balloch and Balmaha. The water stays cold, around 12 to 16C in summer, so keep close to the shore and watch for boat traffic.
At its deepest, Loch Lomond drops to about 190 metres (623 feet), making it the deepest loch in the Lowlands. The northern basin runs far deeper than the shallower southern end.
It's Scotland's largest loch by surface area and the centrepiece of the country's first national park. The old song 'The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond' made its name, and being within easy reach of Glasgow while still offering Highland scenery keeps it among Scotland's most visited spots.
There's no charge to visit the loch or enter the national park. You may pay for parking at busy sites like Luss, Balmaha and Rowardennan, especially in summer, and boat trips or activities are charged separately.
