Macallan Distillery
The Macallan has made whisky on the Easter Elchies estate, overlooking the River Spey, since 1824. The distillery uses small pot stills and brings in sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez for ageing. This careful process gives the whisky its deep flavours - think dark chocolate, dried fruit, orange peel, and a bit of spice - along with the smooth texture Macallan fans know well.Macallan’s focus on quality and its rare older bottles have made it a world-famous name. Some bottles have set auction records, showing just how sought after this whisky is among collectors and fans.The visitor centre, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, opened in 2018 and sits partly underground in the Speyside hillside. Its oak and glass roof follows the shape of the land above. The building won the RIBA Award for Architecture in 2019 and is considered one of the most striking modern sites in Scotland - a destination worth seeing, even before you try the whisky.

The Macallan is near Craigellachie in Speyside, Moray, about 60 miles east of Inverness and 10 miles from Dufftown. Its visitor centre, opened in 2018 to a design by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, is set into the hillside above the River Spey and has become a major architectural attraction in its own right.

The distillery uses only first-fill sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, which give the whisky its trademark richness: dried fruit, Christmas spice, chocolate and orange peel, with a long, warming finish. The 12-year-old Sherry Oak is the iconic entry point, and older expressions develop extraordinary complexity and depth.
