It's the oldest golf course in the world and the spiritual home of the game, played on this ground since at least the 15th century. The 18th fairway, Swilcan Bridge and the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse form one of sport's most recognisable scenes.
Golf has been played at St Andrews since at least 1552, and the layout has evolved over the centuries. It's widely taken to be the world's oldest course.
It's a public course, and anyone can enter the ballot to play. If you're not playing, you can walk it on Sundays when it's closed to golf, or follow the footpath alongside the 1st and 18th fairways any day.
It's owned and run by St Andrews Links Trust, a charitable trust set up by Act of Parliament. It's a public course rather than a private club.
