Aberfoyle sits about 27 miles northwest of Glasgow, roughly 45 minutes by car on the A81 through Milngavie and Strathblane.
Doon Hill rises to 82 metres, a gentle, accessible climb just outside the village. It's steeped in fairy folklore and tied to the 17th-century minister Reverend Robert Kirk, whose spirit is said to be trapped in the old pine tree at the summit.
Aberfoyle works well for families, with the Scottish Wool Centre, forest walks, and easy access to Loch Lomond. Children tend to enjoy the Duke's Pass drive and the Doon Hill fairy walk.
