Bruichladdich stands on the shore of Loch Indaal and has done so since 1881. The distillery still uses its old Victorian machinery - something you don’t see every day. Tradition matters here, but Bruichladdich is just as well known for trying new things and doing things its own way. That mix sets it apart from the rest on Islay.Bruichladdich shut down in 1994 and nearly vanished. In 2001, Mark Reynier and Jim McEwan took over and brought the place back to life. They focused on full transparency - sharing details of every barley batch before it was common practice. That approach set a new standard for the industry.The distillery makes three main whiskies. Bruichladdich is unpeated - light and floral, with the barley’s flavour front and centre. Port Charlotte has a strong, smoky taste. Octomore takes peat to the extreme, always pushing what’s possible. Tours here go beyond sampling whisky; you get a look at what drives the team and how each bottle comes together.

Bruichladdich is the most transparent and progressive distillery on Islay. It declares the full provenance of its barley on every bottle, runs Victorian equipment that's never been modernised, and makes three distinct styles: unpeated Bruichladdich, heavily peated Port Charlotte, and the world's most heavily peated whisky, Octomore.
Bruichladdich is on the western shore of Loch Indaal, in the village of the same name, across the water from Bowmore. It's one of the more accessible Islay distilleries and pairs easily with Bowmore and Caol Ila on a northern and western Islay itinerary.
It's open year-round for guided tours and tastings, with an unusually broad range on offer, from introductory tours to in-depth production visits and blending sessions. That commitment to transparency and provenance shows in the tours, which are among the most informative on Islay.
Octomore is Bruichladdich's ultra-premium heavily peated expression, and the most heavily peated whisky in the world, typically measuring 100 to 300 parts per million of phenols against around 35 to 40 ppm for Laphroaig. Released each year in limited quantities, it's one of the most sought-after and collectible whiskies made in Scotland.
