Considered as one of Scotland’s most recognisable and photographed landmarks, Eilean Dolan Castle is renowned for appearing on many calendars and shortbread tins. Its stunning surroundings captivates anyone who sees it, making it a popular attraction for visitors in the Highlands. Perched on a small tidal island where three water lochs - Loach Duich, Loch Long, and Lock Alsh - meet, and framed by the wooded mountains of Kintail, the castle overlooks the Isle of Skye and provides an absolutely stunning view attracting visitors year after year. Eilean Donan is one of the most photographed castles in the world, thanks to its island setting where three sea lochs meet. It was largely destroyed in 1719 and painstakingly restored between 1919 and 1932.
The castle has featured in plenty of films, most famously Highlander (1986), The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), plus many TV programmes and documentaries.
That title usually goes to Eilean Donan Castle, regularly named the most photographed spot in Scotland and one of the most photographed castles anywhere.
It wasn't. Braveheart (1995) was shot mainly in Ireland and at other Scottish locations. The imagery people link with the film comes more from Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument area.
