Kilchurn Castle

One of Scotland’s most photographed castles, Kilchurn Castle, sits at the head of Loch Awe with Ben Cruachan seen behind it. Built at the middle of the fourteenth century by Sir Colin Campbell, it served as the Campbell’s of Glenorchy’s powerhouse for 150 years. Confirmed by a 1449 charter, the five-storey tower house included a hall, prison, cellar and private chambers. During a period of political unrest in 1689, the castle was transformed into a garrison by Sir John Campbell with barracks built for 200 soldiers - now the oldest surviving barracks on the British mainland. It was used as an outpost during the Jacobite uprisings, though rarely used in conflict. Today, visitors can view the outside as it is closed for conservation work, and enjoy view from the battlements over Loch Awe, the former heart of Clan Campbell power.
