Rannoch Moor

One of Europe’s last true wildernesses, the Rannoch Moor is a vast, untamed area of around 50 square miles of remote, rugged beauty. Bogs, lochans, rivers, and rocky outcrops make up this area and it’s a haven for wildlife, including deer, grouse and curlews. The greatest way to explore this surreal setting is on a scenic drive that crosses miles of remote, dramatic landscape—offering breathtaking views and a real sense of seclusion. Outlander fans would know Kinloch Rannoch, as the filming location for Craigh na Dun, when Claire first travels back to 1743. Adventurers can take use of beautiful paths, such as those that go to Corrour and surrounding Loch Ossian, as well as hillwalking and cycling. A visitor station at Rannoch Station tells the story of the moor’s evolution, wildlife, and the importance of the railway to the region.
