The painted houses along Main Street are a fairly modern touch. The reds, yellows, pinks, blues and greens were chosen to give the harbour front a cheerful character, and they've since become the thing Tobermory is best known for.
The waters around Mull and the Hebrides, especially the Sound of Mull off Tobermory, are among the best in Europe for spotting minke whales, common dolphins, harbour porpoises and basking sharks in summer. Wildlife boat trips run from Tobermory between May and October.
It was. The BBC children's series Balamory, which ran from 2002 to 2005, was filmed here, and the coloured houses on Main Street are instantly recognisable as the characters' homes. It's still a big draw for families visiting the island.
Most people take the CalMac ferry from Oban to Craignure, about 45 minutes, then drive or take a coach across Mull, roughly an hour more. A direct ferry from Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula is another option at 35 minutes. Book the ferry ahead in summer.
