Fort Augustus, is a quaint Highland village perched at the southern tip of Loch Ness along the Great Glen Way. It boasts breathtaking views of the loch and welcomes cyclists and hikers. Set halfway between Inverness and Fort William on the Caledonian Canal is a perfect place to unwind and watch boats pass though the locks, explore the canals history at the Heritage Centre, or experience Highland life at the Clansmen Centre. Within a hours drive, visitors can also take a Loch Ness boat, visit nearby Urquhart Castle, or use Fort Augustus as a starting point to explore famous sites like Eilean Donan Castle. Fort Augustus is famous for its setting at the southwest end of Loch Ness and the flight of locks that carry the Caledonian Canal down through the village.
The village sits on a single loch, Loch Ness. The Caledonian Canal, though, connects four main lochs: Loch Ness, Loch Oich, Loch Lochy and Loch Linnhe.
The village is named after Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. The fort itself was built by General George Wade in the 1720s and 30s, after the earlier Jacobite rising.
You can walk the Caledonian Canal towpaths, which form part of the Great Glen Way.
