Fort William bills itself as the outdoor capital of the UK. It's the base for climbing Ben Nevis, mountain biking at the Nevis Range, riding the Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig and white water rafting, and a gateway to Glencoe, Glenfinnan and the Isle of Skye.
It's worth it for the setting alone, on Loch Linnhe beneath Ben Nevis. The town itself is more functional than pretty, but the country around it is among the most dramatic in Scotland.
Fort William is known as the northern end of the West Highland Way, the starting point for climbing Ben Nevis, and the departure point of the Jacobite Steam Train, the 'Hogwarts Express', to Mallaig.
You can. The Mountain Track starts at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre, about 2 miles from the town centre, and most walkers drive to the car park there before setting off.
