About

Rest and be Thankful

The Rest and Be Thankful, is one of the most dramatic valleys you’ll ever see and it is simply spectacular. It is the highest point on A83, sitting 803 feet above sea level and separates Glen Kinglas from Glen Croe. From the viewpoint, you can trace the path of the historic military road, which was designed by General Wade during the Jacobite era and completed inx 1750. A commemorative stone stands to mark this historic feat. Words hardly do justice to the magnificent beauty of this Highland pass. At Hopscotch Travel, we have a number of tours which incorporate the Rest and Be Thankful, ranging from day tours from Edinburgh , day tours from Glasgow and multi-day tours . Some of these include our 4 Day Islay & Whisky private tour , 3 day Isle of Mull private tour and Oban, Glencoe & West Highlands private tour .

FAQs

Why is it called Old Military Road in Scotland?

The Old Military Road network was built by General George Wade and his successors between 1725 and 1737, so government troops could move quickly through the Highlands after the Jacobite Risings. Built by soldiers, they remain a remarkable piece of engineering.

Why is the A83 called the Rest and Be Thankful?

Soldiers who built the original military road in the 18th century named the viewpoint at the head of Glen Croe, marking their relief at reaching the top of the steep climb. A stone inscription at the original viewpoint recorded the sentiment.

Where exactly is the Rest and Be Thankful?

It sits at the summit of the A83 at the head of Glen Croe in Argyll, about 12 miles east of Inveraray, at around 245 metres above sea level.

What is there to see at Rest and Be Thankful?

The main draw is the viewpoint down Glen Croe, one of the finest Highland panoramas in central Scotland. You can walk the old military road alongside the modern one, and on clear days the surrounding peaks are a fine sight.
