Highland Games are held most weekends, and in August the heather turns the hills purple. Midges, the tiny biting insects of the Highlands and west coast, are at their worst from June to August, mostly on still mornings and evenings. However, be prepared for more crowds and higher prices, so booking far in advance is vital.

Autumn

During September to November, Scotland has breathtaking autumnal views, where the landscape is a tapestry of red, orange and gold. The temperature cools down, averaging between 5°C and 15°C.
